Three media, one honest comparison.
These are constantly presented as a progression — 360° was the old thing, volumetric is the new thing, real-time 3D is somewhere in between. That framing is wrong and it costs money. They are three different tools with different jobs, and a lot of good projects use two of them in the same build.

Read the two rows in the middle first. Changeable after delivery and carries live data decide more projects than anything about image quality, and they are the rows nobody asks about until month nine.
Degrees of freedom is the whole decision, and it is oversold.
The jargon is worth thirty seconds because it is the actual axis of choice.
Three degrees of freedom means you can turn your head — look up, down, around — from a fixed position. That is 360° video. You are standing where the camera stood, and you cannot step forward.
Six degrees of freedom adds translation: you can move through the space. That is volumetric capture and real-time 3D.
Every vendor deck presents 6DoF as strictly superior. In production it is a trade, and here is the part that rarely gets said: a large share of your audience will not move even when they can. Most people open an immersive link on a laptop, where movement means a keyboard and a mouse rather than their legs. They orbit a little, they watch, they leave. If your content is a narrative, that behaviour is fine and 3DoF was sufficient. If your content is a space someone must understand, that behaviour is a design failure and you need to actively lead them through it — which is work, and it belongs in the budget.
Six degrees of freedom is a capability, not an experience. Somebody still has to give people a reason to move.
What each is genuinely best at.
360° and 180° video wins on story, atmosphere and presence. A place you want someone to feel rather than analyse. A guided experience with a beginning and an end. Anything where a director choosing the frame is a feature rather than a limitation. It is also, by a distance, the most reliable to deliver: video is a solved problem on every device, it plays over a normal connection, and it can be long without anything falling over. Volumetric capture wins when the real place is the evidence. A construction site as it actually is rather than as the drawings say. A heritage building. A plant layout. A site nobody can visit safely or cheaply. Two properties make it worth the money: it is a record with a date on it, and it is honest about details nobody thought to model. That is why it earns its keep in construction, survey and operations rather than in marketing — and it is the basis of the site wayfinding work we did on a large site where the environment was changing faster than the documentation describing it.
Real-time 3D wins on everything that has to respond. Configuration, variants, pricing, live telemetry, training with branching outcomes, anything a user manipulates, and above all anything that has to be different next quarter. A recording of any dimension is fixed at the moment of capture. A model is a system you can keep. The costs that never appear on the quote.
Each medium has a characteristic hidden cost, and knowing which one applies to you is worth more than a discount.
360°: the reshoot, and the crew you cannot hide. There is no off-camera. Lighting rigs, crew, monitors and the director all have to be somewhere that is not in shot, which changes how the day runs and what it costs. And because nothing can be fixed later, a wrong decision on the day is a returning-to-location decision.
Volumetric: the processing, and everything the capture did not see. The shoot is often the smaller half. Reconstruction, cleaning, alignment, decimation and web optimisation are where the time goes, and they are hard to compress. Reflective surfaces, glass, water, thin structures and moving people all degrade the result. Plan for a cleanup pass, and plan for the capture to be missing something — because it will be, and the answer is a return visit.
Real-time 3D: the assets, and the ownership question. The engineering is rarely the expensive part; the models, materials and optimisation are. And the cost that ends projects is the one after launch, because a model that can change only means something if somebody is funded to change it. Ask who that person is before you commission anything.
All three: rights and people. Volumetric capture of identifiable individuals is personal data. Talent in a 360° film has usage terms. Both need settling at the start of a project rather than the end, especially if the asset is meant to be reused for years.
How they combine, which is usually the right answer.
The most common good outcome is not one of the three. It is a layered build, and it tends to look like this.

usability actually livesThis is why the format argument is usually a category error. A training experience might place real-time 3D equipment inside a captured real room. A property tool might use a splat of the actual building with configurable interiors modelled on top. A brand experience might open with a 360° film and hand over to a configurator.
The practical advice is to decide the layers before the format. If somebody is selling you one medium for the whole build, they are selling you what they make rather than what you need.
A decision sequence you can run in a meeting.
Six questions, in this order. The first one that gives a clear answer decides it.
- Does the content have to change after launch? If yes, real-time 3D, or you are buying a reshoot schedule.
- Does it have to show live or user-specific data? If yes, real-time 3D. Recordings do not take input.
- Is a real, specific place the point — and does it have to be provably true? If yes, volumetric capture.
- Does the subject move, and does the viewer need to choose the angle while it moves? If yes — and only then — you are in 4D volumetric territory, which is a much bigger commitment.
- Is it a story with a beginning and an end? If yes, 360° or 180° video, and spend the saving on the film.
- Who opens it, on what, and how long will they wait? Whatever survived the first five questions has to fit inside that answer. This question does not change the medium; it sets the budget for everything else.
If you cannot answer question six, that is the real finding, and it is worth a short structured discovery before anything is commissioned. It is also the cheapest thing in this article.

What we would steer you away from: commissioning volumetric capture for content that is fundamentally a film, and commissioning any immersive medium at all when the honest requirement is a good interactive page. Immersive work is worth it when the spatial dimension carries information that a flat presentation loses. When it does not, it is an expensive way to make something harder to open.
