Simam Immersive Video: privacy policy

This policy covers one app. Our website is covered separately by our website privacy policy, and our other headset apps each have their own policy, listed on our app privacy page. Where this policy and the website policy differ, this one applies to the app — including the age line below.

Simam Immersive Video plays video in your headset, including 3D-depth video, and lets you watch together with other people in a Watch Party.

The short version

  • No advertising and no analytics, and we do not sell your data.
  • Most of what the app does happens only on your headset. Information leaves it when you open a video link of your own or join a Watch Party, and then only what those features need.
  • We do not record your camera, your room, your voice or your viewing.

Who is responsible for your data

Simam Digital Ltd is the data controller. We are registered in England and Wales, company number 14105316, and our registered office is 2 Windhill Road, Wakefield WF1 4BG, United Kingdom.

For anything about this policy, or to make a request about your data, email support@simamdigital.com. For help using the app, see our app support page.

What the app uses

Your Meta account

When the app starts it asks the Meta Horizon platform to confirm that your Meta account is entitled to use the app (the entitlement check). It also reads your Meta user ID and display name. These are used to confirm that entitlement, to show your name and Meta Avatar to people in a Watch Party you join, and to let friends invite you and see that you are watching (Meta group presence).

We do not receive your email address, your friends list or your payment details.

Movement and tracking

The app uses your head, hand and controller positions to draw the interface, to place the video screen, and to give 3D-depth video its sense of depth. This is processed on your headset only and is not stored. The one exception is a Watch Party, below. The app does not use eye tracking or face tracking.

Passthrough and your room

In passthrough mode the headset shows your real surroundings. The app can also use the room layout you set up on your headset — walls, floor, furniture outlines — to cast the video's light onto your room and to place the screen. Camera images and room data are processed by the Meta system on your headset. The app does not record, store or send them anywhere.

Watch Party, only if you start or join one

A Watch Party lets up to eight people watch the same video together. When you use it:

  • The party session: your display name and an anonymous session ID are sent to Unity Gaming Services — Authentication, Lobby and Relay, run by Unity Technologies — to create the party and connect everyone in it. A short join code is created that you can share.
  • Avatar and movement: while you are in the party your Meta Avatar and your live head and hand positions are sent to the other people in it, so they can see you. This is not stored.
  • Voice chat: if you allow microphone access, your voice is sent live to the others through Vivox (Unity Technologies). Voice is used for Watch Party and nothing else. You can mute at any time, and you can refuse or withdraw microphone permission in your headset's settings. We do not record voice chat.
  • Playback sync: which video is playing, and its play, pause and seek state, is shared with the party.

When the party ends the session data is discarded under Unity's retention rules. We do not keep a copy.

The videos you watch

  • Videos included with the app play directly from your headset. The app does not contact a Simam server to play them. If we later stream library videos from our servers, those servers will see your IP address and the file requested, and we will update this policy before that happens.
  • Your own links: if you open your own video link — an HLS, DASH, MP4 or WebM address, for example — the headset connects directly to that address. We do not see the link or the video. Recently opened links are saved on your headset only, so you can reopen them, and you can clear them in the app.

Crash information

The app includes no crash reporting and no analytics of its own. Meta may collect crash and performance reports through the Quest operating system, under Meta's own privacy policy.

What we deliberately do not do

No advertising and no advertising identifiers. No analytics or tracking software. No sale or rental of personal data. No recording of your camera, your room, your voice or your viewing sessions.

Who else receives data

  • Meta Platforms — entitlement, presence, invitations and avatars, under the Meta privacy policy.
  • Unity Technologies — Watch Party lobby, relay and voice chat, under the Unity privacy policy.

Nobody else. The app does not contact a Simam server at all, there is no advertising network, no data broker and no analytics provider.

Meta and Unity may process data outside the UK or the EU. Where they do, they use approved safeguards such as Standard Contractual Clauses.

How long anything is kept

Watch Party session data lasts only as long as the party and is then discarded under Unity's retention rules. Your own recently opened links stay on your headset until you clear them, and you can clear them in the app. We keep nothing ourselves, because the app does not send anything to us. If you email us, we keep that email for as long as it takes to deal with it, and for up to 24 months afterwards.

Our legal basis for using it

We process the information above because we need it to provide the app and the features you choose to use — performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)). Microphone access for voice chat is based on your consent, which you give through the permission prompt and can withdraw in your headset settings.

Age

This app is intended for people aged 13 and over. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Meta applies its own age rules and parent-managed account controls on top of ours. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, email us and we will deal with it.

Other people in a session

This app puts you in a live space with other people. Anything you say out loud can be heard by everyone in that session, and your name is visible to them. We cannot moderate a live voice conversation and we do not listen to one. If someone behaves badly you can mute them, leave, and report or block them through the Meta Horizon tools built into your headset, which is the only route that can act on a Meta account.

Your rights, and how to ask us to delete something

You have the right to ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to have it transferred to someone else.

Email support@simamdigital.com and we will reply within one month. In practice, because the app keeps almost nothing about you on our systems, the honest answer to a deletion request is usually that there is nothing for us to delete — and we will say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise. Data that Meta holds about your account, including your avatar and your display name, is managed in your Meta account settings, where you can also remove the app's access to it.

If you are not happy with how we have handled it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.

Keeping it safe

We hold no database of app users, which removes the thing most often lost in a breach. Email we receive is held in business accounts protected by two-factor authentication.

Changes to this policy

If the app starts using data in a way this policy does not describe, we update the policy before that version ships, and the date at the top changes with it.
