This policy covers one app. Our website is covered separately by our website privacy policy, and our other headset apps each have their own policy, listed on our app privacy page. Where this policy and the website policy differ, this one applies to the app — including the age line below.
Simam Discover XR is a mixed-reality app for Meta Quest. You see your own room through the headset's passthrough view and virtual objects are placed in it. Several people in the same room can share a session and see the same objects in the same places.
Simam Digital Ltd is the data controller. We are registered in England and Wales, company number 14105316, and our registered office is 2 Windhill Road, Wakefield WF1 4BG, United Kingdom.
For anything about this policy, or to make a request about your data, email support@simamdigital.com. For help using the app, see our app support page.
When the app starts, the Meta Horizon platform passes it your Meta user ID, your Horizon display name, your profile picture and your Meta Avatar, and confirms that you own the app.
These are used for two things: checking your copy is a licensed one, and showing your avatar and name tag to the other people in your session so everyone can tell who is who. We do not copy them to any server of ours. They exist in the headset's memory while the session runs and are gone when it closes.
In a shared session the app sends the other participants what it needs to animate your avatar for them: the position of your head and hands, your hand poses if you use hand tracking, and your avatar's appearance as Meta supplies it.
Voice chat streams your microphone live to the other people in the session. It is not recorded and not stored — not by us and not by anyone acting for us. Your avatar's mouth moves in time with your speech, and that is worked out from the sound of your voice, not from a camera. Your headset asks for microphone permission the first time; you can refuse it, or withdraw it later in the headset's settings, and the rest of the app still works.
Your head position, your controllers and your hands are read by the headset itself and used in the app as it runs. That happens on your headset. The only part that leaves it is the position data the other players need in order to see your avatar.
The app does not use eye tracking or face tracking.
To put a virtual object on your real table and keep it there for everyone, the app uses Meta's scene features: the room layout and room mesh your headset has already captured, and spatial anchors, which hold a position in your room.
Because this app is built for people in the same physical room, it also uses shared spatial anchors: your headset and the others exchange an anchor through Meta's service so that all of you agree where a virtual object is sitting. What is exchanged is Meta's reference to a point in space, handled by Meta.
All of this is handled on your headset and by Meta's own services. We do not receive, see or store your room mesh, your room layout, your anchors, or any image from your headset's cameras. None of it is used for advertising and none of it is ever sold.
Networking and voice run on Photon Fusion and Photon Voice, from Exit Games GmbH, who process this data on our behalf. To join you to the others, Photon handles your IP address, a session identifier, and the live state of the session — positions, and who is speaking. Photon connects you through the server region nearest the people in your session, so this may be processed outside the United Kingdom. Their notice is at photonengine.com/Legal/Privacy.
No advertising and no advertising identifiers. No sale or sharing of your data for anyone else's purposes. No analytics software, no crash-reporting software and no tracking of any kind inside the app. We do not build a profile of you. The only reporting we see is the aggregate figures Meta gives every developer in the Horizon dashboard — installs, sessions, crash counts — which do not identify you.
Nobody else receives anything. We use no advertising network, no data broker and no analytics provider.
Everything the app handles about you — your avatar, your name tag, your voice, your position — lasts only as long as the session you are in. Nothing is written to a database of ours, because we do not run one for this app. Photon holds short-lived connection records for the operation and security of its service, under its own policy.
If you email us, we keep that email for as long as it takes to deal with it, and for up to 24 months afterwards so we have a record of what was asked and answered.
Under the UK GDPR we rely on performance of a contract (Article 6(1)(b)) — we cannot put you in a shared session without passing the others your avatar, your name and your position, which is the thing you opened the app to do; legitimate interests (Article 6(1)(f)) for checking the app is licensed and keeping it stable and secure; and your consent for your microphone, which your headset asks for separately and which you can withdraw at any time.
This app is intended for people aged 13 and over. It is not directed at children under 13 and we do not knowingly collect anything from them. Meta applies its own age rules and parent-managed account controls on top of ours. If you believe a child under 13 has used the app, email us and we will deal with it.
This app puts you in a live space with other people. Anything you say out loud can be heard by everyone in that session, and your name is visible to them. We cannot moderate a live voice conversation and we do not listen to one. If someone behaves badly you can mute them, leave, and report or block them through the Meta Horizon tools built into your headset, which is the only route that can act on a Meta account.
You have the right to ask us for a copy of what we hold about you, to have it corrected or deleted, to restrict or object to how we use it, and to have it transferred to someone else.
Email support@simamdigital.com and we will reply within one month. In practice, because the app keeps almost nothing about you on our systems, the honest answer to a deletion request is usually that there is nothing for us to delete — and we will say so plainly rather than pretend otherwise. Data that Meta holds about your account, including your avatar and your display name, is managed in your Meta account settings, where you can also remove the app's access to it.
If you are not happy with how we have handled it, you can complain to the Information Commissioner's Office at ico.org.uk.
We hold no database of app users, which removes the thing most often lost in a breach. Email we receive is held in business accounts protected by two-factor authentication.
If the app starts using data in a way this policy does not describe, we update the policy before that version ships, and the date at the top changes with it.
